Powderhorn Lake Trip Report for March 1-3, 2013

Powderhorn Lake Trip Report for March 1-3, 2013

We had ten anglers this year for the annual trip to the Powderhorn Lake in Indianola. Thanks for all that made this trip a great success. The fishing was awesome on Friday, a challenge on Saturday and had perfect weather on Sunday morning to wrap up what our weekend was like.

Friday was on, the weather was a little windy but parable for the ones that launched around 7am to 8am. Bruce was the first to hit the water and headed to his honey hole as the rest of us headed to the opposite side to fish with the wind to our backs. Looks like everyone stayed close this time do to waiting for the wind to pick up around noon. The water in the lake was the lowest it has been in the last 5 years since this trip leader has seen. You could walk across the lake from the North to the South shorelines with the water depth at about average of 2-3 feet. Well as for the fishing, Brad was the first to start catching redfish like the fish whisperer that he is. Topwater baits were the preferred bait at the early morning bite. We had to work them slow and with a small pause to get them to set the hook on them. The plan was to catch our dinner for Saturday night for the fish fry that was scheduled for the next day. We succeeded our goal with plenty of reds and a few trout. Our Saturday ended as we all sat down for the famous steak dinner at the marina to swap fish stories and strategies for the next day with great company of PACK anglers.

Saturday was a complete opposite of what we had on Friday. We woke up with the palm trees waiving good morning to all of us. This day was defiantly a typical PACK trip that a few of us now about, WINDY. Nine diehards did not let the wind stop us as we launched to find those same fish from Friday. No luck in finding any, but there was a report that someone had caught the lost rat red in the lake. We called it an early day that day and headed in for the Patty Melt special at the marina. It was a brutal paddle back and the wind was not letting down. For dinner that night we planned our fish fry with the fish from Friday. We all met up at the house that Garland had on Magnolia Beach. Thanks Garland for the hospitality and the view of the bay from the back porch. Bruce used his special recipe for the fish fillets and once again outstanding. We all had plenty and everyone was full with the great meal that night.

Sunday morning was again the opposite of Saturday, go figure! We woke up to a very light wind and a calm bay. A few went out again this morning on finding them again. As for a few of us, we got an early start on the road home after a great weekend with a group of anglers and friends. Till next time, tighlines.

Trip Report- San Bernard July 14, 2012

Rain, rain go away was what was in the minds of the six brave anglers that decided to tackle the waters of Cedar Lakes in the San Bernard area. I would like to thank Terri M., Troy S., Michael E., Jason M., and Geoff M. for making the trip with me and dealing with the crazy weather we had that day.
We arrived at the launch around 6am to a ICW of calm water that looked like glass. It sure did look promising for this trip, but mother nature had other plans. As the rest of the group arrived so did the rain. We had to wait it out and we were checking the radar on Jason’s phone and we could see that it was passing by so Jason , Michael and I launched to the entrance of the lake just across the ICW. We fished the opening hoping to find the trout, but we found no takers. The entrance to the right has a new gate in front of it (a huge tree) that will prevent any boat from coming into the lake from this way. So we had the lake all to ourselves. Water was higher than normal with most of the grass covered with it, but there was a lot of bait movement. We started to fish the first cut to the left and that when Michael got the first keeper trout of the day. Terri set up on the opposite shore line fishing the canal and catching good size croaker like a natural. I got a few hits but no takers yet. Jason left to canal and took off into the lake poling his way around. He found the trout and a few reds on his journey. Michael moved to one of the opening to the lake when he got on the radio to inform us that a small pod of reds were heading our way. As I was thanking him for letting us know I get hit and start the fight with a 23.5” redfish. So that made my day with a trout and red in the box.
The day was clear of rain till around 10:30am and we could see some disturbance on the gulf come our way. We then decided to paddle in just in case it got worst. At the launch it drizzled a bit but we all got back safely. We got a count on all the fish that were caught and looked like a successful trip for what the weather had to offer. All gear put up, fish cleaned and gear put up for the ride home and the skies cleared up, but no one wanted to take a chance. Mother nature always has the upper hand.
So once again thanks to all for make this trip a successful one and looking forward to the next.
Powderhorn Lake 2012

Lots of wind and rain could not stop thirteen PACK members from making the trip to Powderhorn Lake this weekend. We were glued to the Weather Channel to try to keep up to date on how much rain we would be expecting. The rain was not as bad as the wind, which changed directions a few times during the trip. I guess you can say this was just another typical PACK trip with the wind and rain.

On Friday a few of us started to arrive around 7am to a wind churned lake. The forecast did not look too promising for us, but we came to conquer. A few of us launched to fish the back flats to the left after the channel to find some protection from the wind. For four of us we struggled to find them that day, but Mother Nature won this battle. It was overcast, so sight casting was out of the question. As the day progressed the rest of the troops began to arrive. The Fish Whisperers (Bruce and Brad) arrived, launched and found a few trout. After they cleaned their catch and feed the seagulls, the rest of us just stood around and could see that there was some promise in the rain. For dinner a few of us ate the famous rib eye dinner that the Indianola Marina serves on Friday night. It was raining pretty well that night so we called it a night to see if the morning would be a little better for us.

Saturday the Fish Whispers went to their designated areas had their limits of trout by 10am. These trout averaged around 20” or above. Nice catch with the weather still being the issue. It was awesome that all that went out came back with some fish. On this day the wind changed in three directions and yes we conquered. This trip was made a success with the diehards that did not let some crazy wind and rain stop the hunt. Later that night the wind died down after dinner, so a few of us fished under the lights and caught a few trout. Greg casted one of his owe fly’s under the light and also caught his third saltwater fish with the fly rod. It was really late by the time we headed back for some sleep time. Morning came by so fast do to the time change, but once again a group of four launched out in search for the honey hole from yesterday. No fish were found there, but maybe we will find them next year when we return.

I would like to thank all that attended the Powderhorn Lake 2012 trip even with the bad weather. Maybe next year the weather will work in our favor. Tightlines for all.
Powderhorn Lake 2011

Powderhorn Lake 2011 was a successful trip again for all. Limits of trout were caught by Brad V. and Bruce B. All the others picked up trouts, reds, black drums and flounders during the weekend.

On Friday, a few of us launched out by day break to a calm wind to head out to your spots. It was like glass on the water till about 8 am. The wind picked up as the day progressed. From what it looked like everyone spread out in different directions looking for the bite. Bob S. and I hit the shoreline on the opposite on the lake directly in front of the launch area. A few rat reds were caught on the flats over hard sand and shell. It also protected us from the wind that was increasing as the day went on. Bob S. was also trying out a Hobie Mirage on this trip. This weekend was a great way to test it with the element that Mother Nature offered us. As the day went on more PACK members joined us on the water. Around lunch time a few of us came back in the get something to eat and to clean some fish as well. Brad V. caught the first limit of trout that day out in lake in the deeper water. Great job Brad V.

On Friday when everyone settled in after a long paddle/peddle on the windy lake we all went and ate at the marina for our steak dinner. It was nice for all of us to get together and swap the days adventures with each other during dinner. That night I decided to fish from the bulk head at the marina under the lights. With my gold spoon I caught a few specks while the locals were fishing with shrimp on the bottom. As I was catching the specks, one of the locals could not resist asking me what I was using to catch these fish. A few minutes later he too was throwing a gold spoon as well. But the bite stopped. So I gave him the only keeper trout I had caught under the lights for going inside to buy one of those top dollar spoons. We still had Saturday to fish anyways.

Saturday morning was about the same conditions in the morning. Most of us launched about 6:30am. It was smooth paddle/peddle out to the lake with the water a little higher than Fridays conditions. Doby and I went the the same area in the morning from the previous day to look for some reds. We spaced ourselves about 100 yard. This is were I caught my only keeper of the day, a 24.5 red. As I was trying to call him over he got a hit on his Spook Jr about 5 feet from his kayak. When he went to set the hook the line snapped. He lost his lure and a nice red. Later that morning as I was drifting I found a Spook Jr floating near me. I picked it up and placed it on my boat. By this time the wind was starting to increase to about 10-15 mph and it was starting to white cap on the flats. A few of us came back in around 2pm to some serious wave movement in the channel. By this time the wind was a good 20-25 mph. Is this a pattern that PACK trips are always having? We seem to bring the wind with us. But that don't stop us from catching fish. Bruce B. came in with his limit of trout. Nice stringer for a brutal day on the water.

Saturday night the limit catchers fried their catch for us for dinner. Thanks guys for a wonderful dinner that night.

I would like to thank all that joined us on this trip to for making it fun and memorable. We had about 14 members on this trip. Once again thank you all for helping me make this trip a success.
